Layer 2 L2

A scaling network built on top of a base blockchain that inherits its security while offering faster, cheaper transactions.

Layer 2 solutions process transactions off the main chain (Layer 1) while posting cryptographic proofs or data back to it for security. Rollups — the dominant L2 architecture — batch thousands of transactions and submit compressed proofs to Ethereum. Optimistic rollups (Arbitrum, Optimism) use fraud proofs; ZK rollups (zkSync, Starknet) use validity proofs. L2s offer 10–100x lower fees and higher throughput while inheriting Ethereum's settlement security.
