Staking
Locking tokens in a protocol to earn rewards — either securing a PoS network or providing incentivized protocol participation.
Staking has two related meanings in crypto: native PoS staking (locking ETH, SOL, etc. to validate the network and earn protocol-issued rewards) and DeFi staking (locking tokens in a protocol to earn governance power, fee revenue, or incentive emissions). Staking ratios — what percentage of total supply is staked — affect circulating supply and can be a signal for long-term holder conviction. Liquid staking derivatives (stETH, rETH) allow staked assets to be used in DeFi simultaneously.
