Maximal Extractable Value MEV
The profit miners or validators can capture by reordering, inserting, or censoring transactions within a block.
MEV (formerly Miner Extractable Value) is value extracted by block producers through their ability to include, exclude, or reorder transactions. Common MEV strategies include front-running (copying and jumping ahead of profitable transactions), sandwich attacks (bracketing a trade to profit from slippage), and liquidation racing. MEV is estimated at hundreds of millions of dollars per year on Ethereum. MEV-Boost and PBS (Proposer-Builder Separation) are mechanisms designed to distribute MEV more fairly across the validator set.
